Adrianne
Martinez and David Whitney are the forces behind the Wild Banana
project on the island of Maui in Hawaii. Their dedication to the
underground art scene enables them to continue infecting the island
with unique artwork, even without a permanent physical gallery space.
Enter The Artspew Mobile Gallery: A rented moving
truck re-designed as a rolling art exhibit. Mark's show was the
maiden voyage of what we hope will be a history of Mobile Gallery
events sponsored by Wild Banana. Mark created smaller pieces especially
for this show in order to accommodate the compact exhibit space.
The opening reception was held on
February 20th at Hapa's Nightclub in Maui. The Artspew Gallery parked
prominently in front of the club and displayed Mark's art to both
longtime fans of Devo, and curious onlookers who left confused and/or
delighted.
Inside the club, a number of local bands and performance artists
entertained Mark, his fiance Anita, and a crowd of merry spuds.
Included were #20 Dragonfly, Juha, Dispell,
Dimune, Hinterlander, The Mole, and Puritan - all of which provided
ample freakishness to the evening.
Two more stops on different days brought the Artspew Mobile Gallery
to Lahaina on Feb. 21st, and Paia on Feb. 22nd. We met many interesting,
pleasant folks along the way...and confused both tourists and locals
with Mark's perplexing art.
Other activities during our fantastic visit to Maui included hiking
in the bamboo forest, swimming in the pacific, spotting rainbows.
Thanks, Maui! Can't wait to visit again.
